What Happens to Stump-Grinding Chips?

Why the chip pile can be surprisingly large
The stump occupied a dense, compact volume. Grinding converts it into irregular chips, fibers and soil with air spaces between the particles. Broad root flare and exposed roots can increase the total volume well beyond what the flat stump diameter suggests.
Leaving chips in the hole
Leaving material onsite is often the simplest scope, but loose grindings are not the same as compacted soil. They may settle, hold moisture differently and create an uneven surface as the material breaks down.
Spreading or piling chips
Some homeowners reuse grindings in informal landscape areas. The material is usually mixed with soil and may contain pieces of root, so it should not be treated as uniform bagged mulch. Keep piled material away from trunks, structures, drains and locations where it could wash into a pool or storm system.
