STUMP GRINDING COST
Size matters—but access, roots and project scope matter too.
Use this pricing guide to understand how diameter, root flare, quantity, gate access, grinding depth and cleanup affect a stump grinding quote.
WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES A STUMP GRINDING QUOTE?
Visible trunk diameter is only the starting point. A realistic estimate also accounts for the spreading root flare, species hardness, number of stumps, equipment access, rocks or concrete near the stump, requested grinding depth and how chips will be handled.
- Widest stump and root-flare diameter
- Number of stumps on the property
- Gate width and travel route
- Desired depth and future use of the area
- Nearby fences, pools, pavers, utilities or structures
- Chip spreading, piling or removal requirements

THE STUMP MAY BE EASY. GETTING TO IT MAY NOT BE.
A stump in an open front yard is different from the same-size stump behind a narrow gate, beside a pool or at the end of a soft, sloped side yard.
Access affects which machine can be used, how long setup takes and whether the project can be completed safely without damaging surfaces or landscaping.
SEND THE INFORMATION THAT MAKES THE QUOTE USEFUL.
Measure the Stump
Measure across the widest visible stump and root flare—not only the cut trunk.
Show the Access
Photograph gates, side yards, turns, slopes and nearby obstacles.
Explain the Goal
Tell us whether the area is for sod, mulch, fencing or construction.
List Every Stump
Include all stumps so the total project can be reviewed efficiently.
WHY SIMILAR-LOOKING STUMPS CAN COST DIFFERENT AMOUNTS.
Open-Yard StumpEasy access and a simple work zone generally reduce setup.
Tight-Access StumpGate width, turns and obstacles affect equipment choice.
Project-Specific DepthFence, sod and construction plans may require a different scope.
Multiple StumpsQuantity can improve efficiency, but size and access still matter.DO NOT MEASURE ONLY THE FLAT CUT SURFACE.
The widest root flare often extends beyond the visible trunk. Measure across the full base at ground level and include a photo showing the tape measure.
For multiple stumps, number each one and provide a measurement photo for every stump. This prevents confusion and makes the estimate easier to verify.

STUMP GRINDING COST QUESTIONS
Can you quote stump grinding from photos?
Often yes. Clear stump measurements, access photos and a description of the desired result can provide enough information for a useful estimate.
Does a wider root flare increase the cost?
It can. The grinding area may be substantially larger than the cut trunk surface, especially on mature trees with spreading surface roots.
Are multiple stumps cheaper per stump?
Sometimes, because setup and travel may be shared. The actual difference depends on size, access and distance between work areas.
Does deeper grinding cost more?
It may. Deeper grinding takes more time and creates more material, and site conditions may limit practical depth.
Is chip removal included?
Chip handling should be confirmed in the quote. Leaving, spreading, piling or removing chips can change the scope.
